A good amount of the time, I make characters I never do anything with aside from walk cycles or small interactive exercises. Here are two such characters. One is a longbow archer I was going to use in a game which required the player to use multiple archery weapons to accomplish tasks. The other is Tedrick, modeled off this dog.
As for the bowman, if you use the arrow keys, you can make him walk left and right. You'll notice some frames are not colored and he is missing some frames in his walk. I never did finish him. Also, if you tap the left or right key, you can make him sort of shimmy....
